HOGG online lunchtime talk: Geology and Hospital Planning: A Crimean War Map by Dr Beverly Bergman

  Wednesday 10th February, 13.00-14.00hrs

This lunchtime talk, starting at 1pm, will last between 30 and 40 minutes, followed by time for questions and discussion after the talk. The event will close at 2pm.

Dr Beverly Bergman takes up the story of the ‘Nightingale Hospital’ that was mentioned briefly in the 2020 HOGG AGM talk on Brunel: the Geologist. This pioneering pre-fabricated building was designed by Brunel and shipped out to the Dardanelles. The talk will focus on the selection of the site for the hospital and the survey that was carried out by John Brunton, Brunel’s engineer on the project.

Dr. Beverly Bergman is actively involved in the Earth Sciences through the Edinburgh Geological Society, the Scottish Geodiversity Forum, Lothian and Borders GeoConservation Group and HOGG. Her particular interests are public engagement in science, and the history of geology. A public health physician and former Army general practitioner by background, she qualified in medicine in 1976 at the University of Birmingham, and her early years were spent in military primary care, working in Germany, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, Cyprus and Belize before retraining in public health. She also sits as a Medical Member of the First Tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) and the Pensions Appeal Tribunal for Scotland (War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Scheme). She has a long-standing interest in the history of medicine, and especially in the history of military public health. When not engaged in geology, she is head of the Scottish Veterans Health Research Group, part of the institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow where, as Honorary Senior Research Fellow, she carries out research into the long-term health of military veterans.
